There are a lot of false promises out there, over the internet. What seems like a miracle cure can turn out to be an expensive dud. The diseases and ailments that we suffer from can be so severe, so disheartening that we will try anything. So how can you tell the difference between hype and something truly effective? Research.

The green lipped mussel oil health benefits have been researched thoroughly. Scientists first observed the salubrious qualities of these mussels by observing the incredible health of the Maori, an indigenous population of New Zealand. The Maori had consumed the mussels for a century as the staple of their diet. Even though they were hard, physical people, they never seemed to develop arthritis or any other physical problems.

Scientists were curious about the green lipped mussel’s effect in treating cancer. They didn’t cure cancer, but research patients observed relief from pain and stiffness in their joints. And so the incredible anti-inflammatory properties of the mussels were discovered.

First, scientists studied the green lipped mussel oil health benefits in treating arthritis. Arthritis was induced in test rats, then they were given the GLM oil against a control group that received just olive oil. The results were not conclusive, but the rats showed a definite improvement in their arthritic condition.

Next, scientists studied the green shelled mussel oil health benefits in treating dogs with various forms of arthritis. A variety of dog breeds were used in the experiment. The dogs were giving the mussel oil against a control group.

Veterinarians observed the dogs after and tested them on various things, such as mobility, pain level, and happiness. Again the results were not conclusive but the animals that were given the mussel oil showed a large amount of improvement in all three areas. The majority of the dogs were happier, in less pain, and showed increased mobility.

The green lipped mussel health benefits have also been tested on humans with arthritis. 80 percent recorded improvement in their condition after 8 weeks of use. For those who suffer, or know someone who suffers, from Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, this is incredible news. (more…)

When flax oil vs fish oil for heart health protection, the research shows that fish oil wins over flax oil. This is particularly important if you want to protect yourself and those you care about from heart disease.

So, what is the specific research in relation to flax oil vs fish oil?

In one recent study of 14 controlled clinical trials, researchers at Emory University found that the fish oil omega 3 studies showed a significant reduction in deaths from coronary heart disease and total mortality – from any cause.

These fish oil studies were based on dietary fish consumption and fish oil supplements as the source of omega 3 fish oil.

On the other hand, studies based on flax oil and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega 3 oil from plants that doesn’t contain the DHA and EPA factors found in cold water fatty fish, were found to be less reliable and did not show the same health benefits.

The plant based ALA trials used flax oil supplements and ALA enriched diets, including walnut, soybean and flax seed oil.

The lead Emory University researchers, C. R. Harper and T. A. Jacobson, reviewed the omega 3 clinical trial studies by dividing them into categories. There were plant based omega 3 studies using only ALA (mainly flax oil) and studies on dietary consumption of omega 3 fish oil with DHA (docsahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Of the 14 studies, eight were conducted on flax oil and other ALA sources and six were based on fish oil. The fish oil research included one very large study of over 10,000 participants published in the American Journal of Cardiology. [ Vol. 96, December 2005, pp. 1521-29]

Dr. Harper and Dr. Jacobson concluded that the data on ALA and flax oil was very limited and showed NO significant heart health benefits. Whereas fish oil with DHA and EPA demonstrated a significant reduction in coronary heart disease fatality, sudden death and total mortality.

Several of the studies found that omega 3 fish oil with DHA and EPA fatty acids reduced heart attack risk by benefiting the blood vessel wall cells, lowering the risk of thrombosis and blood clotting and by reducing inflammation. (more…)
